Meeting Goals and Target

We had my boys' IEP meeting yesterday.  He is doing AWESOME in school!  He met all but 1 goal from last year.  He's able to sit and do a non-preferred activity for 18 minutes, write a 4 sentence paragraph with an opener and a closing sentence, add and subtract numbers up to 20, and is initiating social situations.  The OT will continue with him 1x a week for 20 minutes, and the speech therapist will continue 1x a week for 30 minutes in a group setting. Something wonderful that happened this year, and it is that he did not regress during the Christmas break! For the past 3 years it was always VERY difficult for him to transition back into school after the holidays, sometimes taking month to get him back to where he was before. This year he came back without a hiccup :)

Ironically, yesterday was also one of his bad days at school.  His allergies are acting up and didn't sleep well the night before.  He was cranky all day and cried most of the time during lunch and recess.  The IEP meeting was after school so he was anxious to go home and got angry during the meeting. But he got through it and went home.  I told him we can go to Target and get a toy for doing well in school.

We ended up going to Lola's house to hang out for a while. I did homework with the girls.. Pop took Mare to practice.. then I dropped off Mar later to help him out with the team.  Then the boy and I headed out to Target. We picked up some Valentine stuff for the upcoming school parties and then went to the toy section. He wanted the Minecraft lego mine set. We saw it there over and over every time we've been there. But this time... it was sold out.  This really set him over the edge, not because he wanted and can't have it. It's because it broke the routine of what we were suppose to accomplish.  Plus the allergies, plus the broken school routine, plus the lack of sleep the night before.  So we tried to find another toy and he comes across an Infinity game he wants (we don't own an Playstation so it was another no-go). So I said we'll try again at a different Target.  He said OK but still threw himself on the floor and screamed.  I asked him "what are the rules when we go out?". He said "No crying, no screaming, no say shut-up" (we added the "no say shut-up" because after watching Inside Out a million times, the word shut-up became part of his vocabulary).

He really battled trying to keep it together.  He went into the cart and then tried to get out of the cart, then wanted me carry him, then he would throw himself on the floor again... all while screaming crying.  He's been upset like this at home, but never out and about. I'm very sure people were looking. I heard small kids say "uh-oh he's mad".  But all the while I kept telling him calmly  "you're OK my boy, we're almost done and out of here", "you can do it, we're almost done", "try to breath, let's keep walking",  "try to stand up, the floor is not clean", "let's take a small break from walking and squeeze together" (we did this by the girls section where there's carpet. I got down on my knees and hugged him tight because the squeezing around his torso helps him to relax).  We finally almost get to the Check-Out section and he's really beyond melted down and on the floor screaming at this point.  An older man came up to us and said nicely "no little boy, don't do this to mommy". I don't know what the man's thoughts were about the situation but it's okay, I appreciated the gesture. I turned to him and smiled and said "We're okay, he's okay. Thank you though." He still stood around us as I was trying to get Mos off the floor.  I really thought about just leaving my cart full of Valentine stuff there, pick Mos up from the floor and head out of Target. I've done that before... actually a few times before.. when Moses would start crying in a store.  But this time for some reason I decided to finish what I came to do.  I mean, the situation couldn't really get much worse so might as well keep going, right? We were going to get through this. Even though he was upset, I still was responsible for getting these Valentine cookies for Mare's class.  I stood in line carrying him. When it was my turn I put him down to get my card out and I told him "be careful with the people behind you".  He said, "I'm sorry mama, I'm sorry mama."  I know he wasn't doing this on purpose. He really was sorry, and he doesn't want to cause trouble.  This is exactly why I didn't get angry the whole time we were there.  I told him "it's okay my boy we're done at Target, you're okay. We're going to the car now."  As we leave I'm trying to get to the car fast cause I was afraid that he would melt down on the parking lot floor.  He gets in the car and I put the child lock on both back seat doors because I really didn't know if he would get angry and open the doors while I'm driving.  He calms down as we drive off and tells me he's sleepy.  We finally get home and I lay him down. He's still upset but falls asleep.

It wasn't until about an hour later that I felt dizzy, my stomach felt nauseated, and I was incredibly sleepy.  It's like the "Mama Mode" suddenly turned off. I went to sleep pretty quickly after that.  This morning I started crying on my way to work thinking I should have known that the meltdown would have happened.  I should have read the situation better before hand.  And what really made me cry was thinking about how he was saying sorry to me.  I love him so much. He's really a good and kind little boy.  I feel sad that he felt so overwhelmed that he couldn't sort through the stress.  For him to feel so overwhelmed that crying and screaming is the only way to deal with the feelings.  It's his roller coaster and I'm riding it with him. I'll take the hard turns with him forever.  There's nothing I wouldn't do for my kids.. all of them.  I'll take this situation though as a triumph. I didn't breakdown and I believe Moses will remember this too. There will be a day when he'll be too big to carry but we'll deal with that later. If I thought about that now, it will drive me crazy. We just have to better prepare ourselves with situations.  Know that everything is possible. Smile now, cry later.

Autism Awareness Day

"It’s International Autism Awareness Day!  I know many families who oppose this day/month because it glorifies Autism.  Blue lights, blue shirts, blue monuments, blue hair (me), or blue nails, etc.  In my life, the truth about Autism is that it’s not bubbly, it’s not glamorous, and it’s not cute.  In fact, living with someone with Autism is draining and frustrating. I don’t understand the world my son lives in.  He’s mostly happy and smiling except when he has to do homework (like any other kid), cries when he’s sad (like any other kid), and dances anytime and anywhere to any Disney tune.  He also is hyperactive, sensitive to many sounds, vocalizes, and screams often. He’s cautious with strange situations yet wanders off without awareness to dangers.  All this on top of being a devilishly handsome and charming guy! This small description of him is just the tip of the iceberg.
I wish Autism awareness, understanding, and advocating is something people would spread every day. But the reality is that we are all busy with life and that’s totally okay. I would like to use today and this month, while the ‘Light It Up Blue’ eyes are looking, to ask you all to take on a lifetime habit to be kind to anyone and everyone with Special Needs. They might be the one bagging your groceries, or going on their daily routine walk around the neighborhood, or playing by him or herself in the playground.  If you see a person, adult or child, being mistreated because of their differences, please be the positive energy in turning the situation around.  If you see a parent trying to console their upset child, please don’t stare and don’t judge.
So yes! ‘Light It Up Blue’ for Autism Awareness, but also talk about it.  And, also please donate to music, sports, and/or educational organizations that support Autism."

When MJ saw that Moses was having trouble riding the motorcycle and plugging his ears at the same time, she hopped on and plugged his ears for him.  It's one of those things only people who have a sibling with Special Needs understands.

Halloween 2013

This is my first attempt at blogging through my phone... Let's see how it goes!
It was eventful yesterday to say the least!  The kids did the usual school parade and at night we went to the local Senior Center for "Trunk-Or-Treat", and then we hit the neighborhoods for some candy.
Mar dressed as an 80s girl with some hot pink leggings, black leg warmers, a shirt that said Dance on the front, crimped hair, and some gloves.  She basically looked like she came straight out of a 1987 Drill Team High School yearbook picture!
MJ was Vanellope Von Schweetz.  We got the tights from an online store, her green hoodie from Old Navy, and did her hair up with all the candies (refer to my previous post on how to make the candies for the hair).
Mos was Spider-Man again this year except this time his costume had big muscles (thanks to Gani).

Vanellope Von Schweetz Candy Hair with no clips

Here's a trick I learned from my raver days back in the late 90s when I use to put stars and other shiny stuff in my hair.  Who knew that 15 years later this full time working/softball/soccer mom would be using the same trick for their kid?

You will need flat back beads or 3-D stickers that look like candy/sweets, and Velcro hooks (that's the pokey side, not the soft side) that have the adhesive backing.

I went to Michaels the other day and couldn't find any flat back beads or buttons that looked like candy.  So, I headed over to the Scrapbook section to look at the 3-D stickers and totally hit the jackpot.  I ended up getting stickers that were more like "sweets" instead of  "candy".  Etsy sells beads that look like candy but I was afraid that if I ordered them, that they wouldn't get here in time for Halloween.
(Sorry for the poor quality in bad lighting pictures)

The Velcro I had was left over from a previous project.  I liked this long strip of hooks because I was able to cut the sizes I need for the differently shaped stickers I had. If you decide to use the pre-cut circle of Velcro, that will work just the same too!

I then stuck the hook Velcro onto the back of each sticker. For the larger stickers, I put them on a piece of paper first and then cut around the edges so that not so much of the stickiness from the sticker will catch the hair when putting them on.

Fix your child's hair the way you want it first before putting the candies on to the hair.  In this case, Vanellope's hair is a high ponytail, so fix the hair into a high pony tail first.  To put the candies on the hair, just place it on your child's head sort of wiggle it in.
Be sure to know where exactly you want place the candies in your child's hair before putting them on.  Especially with this Vanellope look, her hair is in a high pony tail, so to remove the candies you will have to take the hair down and slide off each candy.

I will take full photo's of MJ on Halloween so you call can see the complete look!

Birthday boy

So I noticed that my last entry, before yesterdays, was 4 years ago on Moses' birthday.  I remember that we had a huge party for him.. and maybe that's what broke my back and then I just forgot about blogging all together.  Now that life is [totally not calm, but] manageable, I'll share this little happy birthday clip from the other day of Moses blowing out his candle on his pizza pie.

it's been 4 years...

I don't even know how to use this thing anymore!  A lot has happened in 4 years so I'll just start off again fresh.  I have to think of certain subjects to blog about.  When i get over this damn cold and have a clear head, i'll start up again.  Somethings to remember (notes to myself): duct tape stuff, cel phone covers, autism awareness, softball, and soccer.  In the meantime, enjoy these mugs.

Mary Jane's Open House

Man, a whole summer went by and not a single blog. I'm horrible. But now it's the end of the year again and there will be MUCH to blog about!
Mary Jane started preschool this past September and boy does she LOVE IT! She is the youngest in the school so the other kids try to baby her but she won't have it. Miss Independent likes to carry her own lunch bag and put it away, sets up her own art area (by this i mean she gets out her own glue, markers, crayons, and supplies and just creates things with no direction), and slides down slides with no help. When children are sad and miss their mommies, she get's them a tissue and tells them "okay...okay". She acts like she's been going to school her whole life (all 2 years :P).

Funny story about this faceless kid in the red jacket. His uncle was my dad's classmate in UP! Small world huh?

The title should read "my hand is this little".

We have tons of these "self portraits" at home.

Silly small kid...

When the night was over, all the eyes on these spiders were gone. Guess which toddler with big teeth ate them all?

Happy St. Patty's Day!

I could never get this blogger right. I uploaded pictures and they all loaded in a different order than i wanted.... whatever. Anyway, Happy St. Patty's Day! or almost St. Patty's Day. I never cared much for this holiday (is it a holiday?), i don't ever wear green on the day either. I'm not anti or anything, i just don't know when the day comes. This year, however, is different cause Mar had this school project where she has to make a Leprechaun Catcher. She did all the decorating, glittering, coloring, cutting, and gluing, but i'm the one who pretty much put the main parts together.

So pretty much how this works is that the Leprechaun thinks this is the end of the rainbow and goes through the little walk way to get his pot of gold. When the Leprechaun grabs the pot it will trigger the trap and the basket will fall on top of the little sucker.

MARY JAY-HAYN!

I feel bad. I totally get the whole middle child thing now. It's not that i don't do things with Mary, it's just that she tends be overlooked once in a while. So, i'm dedicating this post all to her!
Even though she's one of the cutest things ever.... she doesn't photog well. It's the weirdest thing cause i swear she's smiling perfectly, and then her pictures always come out like this..

and they usually come out like this even if i don't use a flash.
I think it's best to watch her in action anyway!
I'm not sure if i blogged about this before, but she's been going to My Gym to let out her energy about twice a week. This place is absolute heaven to her. She's really use to the whole routine now, which isn't much... just circle time in the beginning, free play, and then story time and the goodbye song at the end. But, for the life of her, she could not sit still at first.. especially with all these things just screaming for her to climb on.

Demolition time.

She can do this one all day!

What i love too is that the set up is different every time. When we step into the play area, she stands there for 2 seconds to kinda take in the scene. Then she's non-stop from there.

This next clip is of Mary ruining a tent due to my lack of supervision... my bad.

Now this last clip is of her just having tea by herself. She didn't know i was filming her. Nothing spectacular about this, but i totally marvel at the fact that she CAN actually play by herself. #1 has trouble in that department.

Perce bag's birthday!

I love birthdays! Especially when they involve drinking, singing, and family. This blogger needs a better way to upload pictures. I tried to upload these in order so that you'd be able to see how we got progressivly drunk.. but it uploaded them backwards. So take a look at -

Perci's red face. He didn't start the night out that way. Conversation with Perci were hilarious that night! For example....

Perci: (talking to Armi and Johnny in a slur) Why are you guys leaving?

Johnny: I have work early in the morning.

Perci: Man! Fuck Amtrak!

The funny part, for those who don't know, Johnny works for Caltrans.

Manuel con Percival - Por vida!

I'm guessing some rap song was playing when we took this picture.

random white guys.

Cheers!

This ones for you Mitor! you know you want this!

getting back into the swing of things.

Does anyone read these anymore?

So anyway, new years has passed, Perci's birthday has passed, Manny's birthday is coming up, then Chamina's, and then Valentine's Day. Time is moving too fast! Moses already rolls from his tummy onto his back.
I'll post pictures when i have time.

Just sharing a few pictures of Leelai's Holiday party! Now that Mos is a little older, i've been able to volunteer more at her school.

mah boy...

Q: What happens when mamma hasn't done laundry and runs out of baby boy blankets?

A: We use baby girl blankets!

Whatever, pink or blue, a blanket is a blanket right? As long as he's warm and cozy, we're all happy. Baby Mos is 2 months now! He's all of a sudden a new baby that talks, laughs, and sleeps in longer increments (a whopping 3 1/2 hours instead of 2).

He's also very lucky to have sisters who love him with all their heart!
